About NZ Site Records

1. A 3-D GPS track log of the flight must be presented for all site record claims. (This has been a requirement since April 1, 2009).

2. To qualify as a new record, the existing record must be broken by more than 1% for records up to 100km, or by at least 1km for records over 100km.

3. The Out-and-Back flight type is straight line distance from a start point to any turn point, then back to the start point. (The ‘2-Turn Point Triangle’ flight type where the start and end point is located between the two remote turn points, although scored in the XC Champs, is not a flight type that a site or national record is currently kept for).

4. The FAI Triangle flight type is a triangle defined by 3 turn points, and the start and finish point can be at any point of the course that is flown. The smallest side of the triangle shall not be less than 28% of the total distance.

5. Mis-close of Out-and-back and Triangle flights.  Since the start of the 2006 NZ XC Champs season, there has been an allowance for pilots not completely returning to their starting point when flying an Out-and-Back or Triangle type of flight task. The ‘mis-close’ amount has varied, but it is currently up to 2% of the flight distance. If the pilot returns to within that ‘mis-close’ distance from their start point at the end of their flight, then they are deemed to have achieved the Out-and-Back or Triangle flight, and so be eligible for a site record. (However, when there is a ‘mis-close’, then the mis-close distance itself is not scored).  The ‘mis-close’ distance is documented in section 6.5.2 of the NZHGPA Paragliding Competition Manual, download-able from the Rules section of the Paragliding Competitions Downloads page.

6. Flights qualifying as a record in more than one category. Sometimes one flight can be the site best flight for more than one type of flight task.  For example a site best triangle flight may, when measured, turn out to be the best out-and-back flight for that site too. However, it is possible there will be cases where an administrator of the flights database has not noticed that.  If this is the case for one of your already recognised site record flights, then please let the data entry person of the NZ PG flights database know (currently Tim Percival), so they can adjust the information recorded for the flight.

7. For more information regarding site records and course types, refer to the Paragliding Competition Rules that is download-able from the Rules section of the Paragliding Competitions Downloads page.

Claiming a NZ Paragliding Cross-Country Record

From July 2020, a national or site paragliding cross-country record claim must be accompanied by a pilot declaration.  This means that the Paragliding Competition Committee (PCC) can no longer routinely ratify flights of the season that have bettered an existing site record.

Detail of how to claim a national or site paragliding cross-country record is given in section 6.5 of the NZHGPA Paragliding Competition Rules manual, download-able from the Rules section of the Paragliding Competitions Downloads page.  Claims should include the mandatory pilot declaration as described in the manual, and be submitted to the Paragliding Competition Committee (PCC).  Part of the process is that the flight will be checked by the PCC or their nominated scrutineer to determine whether or not the flight has met all requirements for a valid paraglider record flight (as per section 6.4.1, “Validation of Flight”, of the NZHGPA Paragliding Competition Rules manual).

If you are reading this and you wish to have a flight of yours ratified and recognised as a record for that take-off, then the onus is on you to submit your flight to the PCC for verification.

Email: [email protected]

The table here lists some of the NZ take-offs from which a flight has been recorded, but which to date do not have any PCC-verified flights.
